Students Help Fight Hunger on Memphis Food Bank Field Trip

Dogwood Elementary’s Student Ambassadors, Principal's Advisory Committee, and K-Kids members recently took part in a meaningful field trip to the Memphis Food Bank, where they learned firsthand about food insecurity in their community and contributed to a day of service. The students, accompanied by parent chaperones, spent the day exploring ways to support local families in need and experiencing the impact of community service.

The trip began with an eye-opening discussion on food insecurity, detailing the levels of need in the surrounding Memphis area. Students learned that many people in their community struggle to access nutritious food, including a growing number of senior citizens. The students were then given a hands-on task: packing meal boxes specifically for seniors. Working in an assembly line, the young ambassadors each took charge of placing certain items into boxes. From canned goods to staple foods, the students learned about the importance of each item in supporting a balanced diet for seniors.

After their volunteer work, the students toured the Memphis Food Bank's expansive facility. They explored various areas, including food storage zones and an onsite store that allows smaller local agencies to shop for necessary food items. The tour also showed students how food donations are delivered and distributed across the region, providing them with a better understanding of the food bank’s operation and the efforts required to maintain a steady flow of resources to families and individuals in need.

“Overall,” counselor and student ambassador sponsor Brandi Fitchpatric said, “I believe our students left with feelings of appreciation and gratitude for what they have.”

Beyond the educational aspect, the field trip did  instill empathy among the students. Many reflected on how fortunate they are and were inspired to continue supporting their community. The Memphis Food Bank encourages volunteers of all kinds, from large groups like schools and churches to families or individuals, and the students left with an eagerness to return and volunteer again.

This field trip offered the Dogwood Elementary leaders not only a unique learning experience but also a powerful reminder of the positive difference they can make through service.
