Dogwood Elementary School marked Veterans Day with a meaningful tribute to local veterans, involving students, staff, and families in a series of engaging activities. In the back circle drive, veterans connected to the school set up tables and tailgates, displaying uniforms, memorabilia, and other artifacts from their time in service. Some veterans sat in lawn chairs behind their vehicles, while others decorated their areas with balloons. Students with connections to these veterans sat proudly with them during the school-wide parade, adding a personal touch to the event.
In the days leading up to Veterans Day, students participated in a Wounded Warrior coin drive, dropping spare change into buckets during morning arrival. For each donation, students received a Wounded Warrior sticker and a star with their name displayed on the wall. The funds raised demonstrated the students’ commitment to supporting veterans and showed them how small acts can make a big difference. The students raised $600 that will help support veterans who were wounded while serving the country.
To prepare for the Veterans Day parade, students also worked on decorations to honor specific veterans, creating information sheets and pictures that lined the school’s walls. This tribute wall allowed students to showcase what they had learned about service, bravery, and dedication. In addition, they wrote notes of thanks to veterans who were involved in the parade.
On the day of the celebration, patriotic music played over the loudspeakers. Classes took turns parading around the circle, stopping to interact with the veterans, handing them notes of appreciation, and asking questions. Each student group had about 15-20 minutes to visit, offering them an opportunity to learn more about the veterans' experiences and the artifacts they brought. Many students were fascinated by the items on display, which included memorabilia and mementos from various periods of service.
After the parade, veterans and their families were invited inside for refreshments, where they enjoyed cake and cookies to the tune of patriotic music. A White Table was also set up in the reception area as a solemn tribute to POWs and MIAs.
Dogwood Elementary’s Veterans Day event provided a heartfelt and educational experience for all, giving students an invaluable opportunity to honor veterans and learn about their sacrifices.
