Students Embrace Halloween Learning Opportunities

Halloween was full of fun and learning at Dogwood Elementary this year! Students across the school celebrated with creative, hands-on activities that brought science and the spooky season together. Fifth graders took on the role of mad scientists during the highly anticipated “Crazy Chemist Day,” while first graders participated in an equally exciting “Spider Day.”

For Crazy Chemist Day, fifth graders got to dress up as eccentric chemists, donning lab coats and wild hair that truly captured the spirit of experimentation. The day was packed with hands-on science activities that let students dive into scientific concepts. One of the day’s highlights was building structures out of pasta and marshmallows, a fun way to explore engineering and balance. The young chemists also whipped up batches of slime, experimenting with textures. In another activity, students discovered how gasses can inflate a balloon, an exciting introduction to chemical reactions. Perhaps the most thrilling moment was when they experimented with bottles of soda, observing fizzy reactions that left everyone in awe. The day sparked curiosity and excitement about science, showing students how much fun learning can be.

Not to be outdone, the first graders had their own Halloween-themed activities with Spider Day. Classrooms were filled with spider-themed lessons across reading, math, and science, transforming the school into a web of learning. Students read stories about spiders, learning facts about these fascinating creatures, and used math to count spider legs and solve spider-themed problems. In science, they explored the differences between spiders and insects and learned about spiders' unique characteristics and habitats.

Both Crazy Chemist Day and Spider Day made Halloween memorable for Dogwood Elementary students, combining festive excitement with interactive learning. It was a day of laughter, discovery, and creativity, and the students walked away with a newfound appreciation for science and nature.
