Fifth Graders Celebrate Learning Differences

At Dogwood Elementary School, 5th graders recently celebrated the completion of Module 0, centered around the book Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. This module emphasized the theme that everyone possesses unique strengths and that learning requires dedication and perseverance. To mark this accomplishment, students participated in a creative and collaborative culminating activity designed by ELA teachers Mrs. Alexa Guynes and Ms. Linda Fredrick that brought the book’s lessons to life.

One of the highlights of the day was the students dressing up as different examples of figurative language from the text. This activity allowed them to showcase their creativity and deepen their understanding of the literary devices used in the story. The room was filled with imaginative representations, transforming the classrooms into a visual display of language and learning.

In keeping with the book’s character, Ally, who learns in her own unique way, students also practiced spelling words in shaving cream. This hands-on activity was not only fun but also helped reinforce their spelling skills through a multisensory approach, making learning both memorable and enjoyable.

Another engaging component was the "What's in the Box" game. This creative thinking exercise required teamwork as students worked together to guess what item was concealed in a box. This collaborative effort mirrored the story's emphasis on cooperation and understanding diverse perspectives.

To further develop their critical thinking skills, students tackled logic picture puzzles, encouraging them to think "outside the box." This challenge was a perfect way to connect with the book's message about embracing different ways of problem-solving.

A trivia game allowed students to demonstrate their comprehension of Fish in a Tree, reinforcing key themes and character insights while fostering a spirit of friendly competition.

Finally, each student illustrated a piece of a large puzzle, which will be assembled to create a beautiful mural. This collaborative artwork symbolizes that although each student has his or her own strengths, together they create a vibrant and inclusive community.

Through these activities, the students at Dogwood Elementary not only celebrated their achievements but also solidified the valuable lessons from Fish in a Tree: that every individual contributes uniquely to the world, and together, we all belong.
