This week, third-grade ELA classrooms at Dogwood Elementary dove deep into an immersive learning experience that’s unlike anything they have done before. As they geared up to read Shark Attack, an educational dive into the ocean’s fiercest predators, they brought these creatures to life.
The ELA team of Paige Boyce and Robin Snipes decided to work with Joelle Dodge, the instructional technology coach, to transform classrooms into ocean-inspired spaces. Think waves, sharks, and everything under the sea. They integrated Virtual Reality (VR) to give students an up-close and personal experience with sharks. Dodge joined classes to help immerse students in a virtual underwater world, allowing them to explore sharks like never before.
This innovative approach not only enhanced their learning about marine life but also offered a fresh way to explore reading material. VR can make learning come alive, and teachers are excited to see the impact it has on student engagement and curiosity as they embark on this underwater adventure.
