Cross Country Kicks Off The Season With A Win

In a display of remarkable endurance and skill, the Dogwood Elementary School Cross Country team returned home victorious after a six-hour drive to compete in the Victor Ashe Fall Classic XC Meet in Knoxville, Tennessee over Labor Day weekend. Despite the heat that made the competition even more challenging, both the girls’ and boys’ teams showcased extraordinary performances.

The meet, which drew 43 teams from across the region, was packed with talent. The girls’ team excelled, finishing in first place out of 17 competing teams. The boys’ team mirrored their success, claiming first place among 26 teams. The athletes' perseverance was further highlighted by individual accolades, with five runners earning trophies for their outstanding placements.

For the girls, Elyn Miller delivered an impressive performance, securing third place with a mile time of 6:15. Teammate Sophia Wilmoth also had an impressive run, finishing seventh with a mile time of 6:27. Their exceptional times were instrumental in the team’s overall victory.

On the boys’ side, Cade Johnson led the team, clinching seventh place with a mile time of 6:05. Cam Strain and Austin Rodgers followed closely, finishing 10th and 12th respectively, with mile times of 6:09 and 6:10. Their strong finishes were pivotal in the boys’ team securing their top spot.

Coach Stacey Schwarzmann praised the team’s effort “There was no expectation for the teams to win the meet,” she said, “but instead to practice racing on the course. Both teams exceeded expectations. The boys have never won a race against Knoxville teams until now!” She expressed excitement for the amazing season ahead.

The Dogwood Elementary Cross Country team’s success at the Victor Ashe Fall Classic not only highlights their athletic talent but also their teamwork. As the season progresses, the team looks forward to building on this victory and continuing their impressive run.
