Fifth Graders Prepare for Middle School

by student writer Becher Mueller

As fifth graders wrap up their time in elementary school, they got a chance to tour Houston Middle School on a field trip. People were eagerly anticipating the new experience.

When students got off the bus, the cheerleaders welcomed them into their school, and students made their way to the gym. Mrs. Davis, the HMS principal welcomed students and explained the house system. They have four houses that students are sorted into, and each week they have house meetings with a small group. She exited and handed the microphone to Mrs. Lang, the sixth grade counselor. She explained they would get sorted by class today, just to see what the experience would be like. They began with Mrs. Coleman’s class, and her class got Dartmoor. Mrs. Henson’s class was next, and her class got  Andalusian. Mrs. Fredrick’s class got Percheron. Mrs. Guynes’s got Dartmoor. Finally, Mr. Bozeman’s class got Lipizzan.

As students made our way to the tour guides, they introduced themselves, and they got tours in smaller groups. They visited the second gym. When they got there, they played a game where they had to answer questions about clubs in bingo. While they were looking at the posters, they had to answer questions such as, “When does Model UN end?” If groups were one of the top three to finish, they got a prize.

The library was another stop. When they got there there were five girls and Mrs. Squires in the room and they played a game called charades. They also learned more about the clubs.

The band room was also on the tour. On the way to the band room they saw some televisions that had the houses and how many points each one had. When they got to the band room, they heard some loud music that was really good. When they sat down, they saw the choir sing a good song. Then the band started to play very well. Then students came and said why they joined the band and the choir.

Houston Middle School combines three schools into one, and people are excited to go because of the time the faculty and staff gives each student. They gave so much kindness to everyone who entered the school for the tour, and it gave fifth grade students a lot to look forward to.
