First Grade Harnesses Love for Reading

By student writer Hadley Lawrence

First grade did a book study on The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. The book is about a boy named William who uses the wind to solve his problem. William and his family are going through a famine, so William uses the power of the wind to bring water to his family.

They read The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind to show how people respond to wind and how people have used it to solve problems.

“We are reading about The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind because it’s part of our ciriculum,” first grade teacher Tasha Britcliffe said. “This book showed how people have used the powerful force of the wind.”

By reading The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind first graders were introduced to some new problem solving skills that will be very important.

The way that students responded shows their teachers make learning fun. A 1st grade boy in Mrs. Brittcliffe’s class exclaimed, “It was fascinating because he [William] found all the pieces to build.''

Another 1st grader named Lorelai in Mrs. Mink’s class enjoyed it because she liked the fun projects they did. Many others loved it for the same reason. They are looking forward to their next book, and a chance to get more nuggets of knowledge.
