Dogwood Celebrates Reading

by student writer Jack Freeman

March 4-8 was Read Across America week. To celebrate this fun event, Dogwood Elementary had a book character parade. Everyone who dressed up was invited to parade around the hallways with the book they represented. There were wizards, athletes, princesses, and Taylor Swifts. Even those who chose not to dress up cheered on their classmates.

One parader dressed up as Stone from Stick and Stone. He said, “I wanted something fun to do with my friends, so the other two dressed as Stick and Pinecone, while I dressed as Stone.”

Teachers and students were very creative. The teacher assistants dressed up like the seven dwarfs from Snow White. Even though Read across America week is five days, Dogwood celebrated it the entire month of March. Dogwood had classroom contests and had a virtual author visit on Monday, March 18th from Beth Ferry. Ferry wrote Stick and Stone and The Scarecrow among other books.

There were also fun activity calendars that allowed students to take the reading fun home. All of this was organized by Dogwood librarian Hillary McIntyre. Overall, the book character parade was a very fun and lively event.
