Always Going the Extra Mile: Dogwood’s Marlena Light
Dogwood Elementary is proud to celebrate Marlena Light, Technology Support Specialist, as this year’s RISE Award nominee. The Tennessee Department of Education’s RISE Award (Recognizing Inspiring School Employees) honors non-teaching staff across the state who go above and beyond to make schools thrive.
Principal Jessica Woody describes Marlena as “an outstanding technology support specialist who consistently goes above and beyond to help others. She never responds with ‘that’s not my job’; instead, she takes ownership and finds solutions with patience and a cheerful smile.”
Her colleagues agree. Whether troubleshooting Chromebooks and printers, reconfiguring iPad carts, or stepping in when Wi-Fi issues disrupt instruction, Marlena is known for her problem-solving spirit. One staff member recalled a day when half the school lost internet after a plug was accidentally pulled: “She tracked it down, figured it out, and had us back online quickly. She always stays calm and keeps things running.”
While her official role is tech support, Marlena’s impact extends far beyond devices. She’s been known to escort preschool classes, dress up as Daisy the Dolphin for Walk to School Day, and even don a turkey costume for the preschool Thanksgiving parade. She answers radio calls, helps in the cafeteria, and pitches in at community events, not because she has to, but because she wants to.

“She exuberates willingness and is one of the biggest go-getters at our school,” said teacher Karen Cunningham. “She doesn’t wait for people to ask for help. She goes to them.”
Teachers and students alike praise Marlena for her approachable, positive attitude. Students often arrive at her office with broken devices, nervous about the consequences. Marlena greets them with reassurance. “If it was an accident, she’s not angry. She just helps them learn from it,” shared colleague Joelle Dodge.
Her willingness to be available, whether during school hours, after hours, or at a Saturday event, has made her an anchor of support for the Dogwood community.
Raised in New Jersey, Marlena built a career in technology through persistence and heart. After earning a degree in computer networking administration, she worked at Apple as a certified “Genius” before moving to Memphis. Wanting more family time, she joined the school system and found her true calling at Dogwood.

“I just love my job, and I don’t feel like I do anything extra,” Marlena shared. “My mom always taught me to help wherever you can, even if it’s small. That’s just how I try to live.”
From fixing devices to creating magical moments for children, Marlena has proven she is more than a technology support specialist. She’s a cornerstone of the Dogwood family.
Her colleagues say it best: “She’s amazing and goes out of her way to help people, even when it’s not her job. Dogwood wouldn’t be the same without her.”
