DES Cross Country Team

The Dogwood run team invites all interested 3rd - 5th grade students to participate in our fall cross country season.  Our runners work to compete in one-mile races through Memphis Youth Athletics’ Cross Country program (   

Summer Practices

Monday Evenings--First Practice July 12th:  We will meet at Johnson Road Park at the 1st pavilion by the lake and croquet field from 6:00-7:00 p.m

Saturday mornings--beginning July 17th at Shelby Farms Gate 8 (on Mullins Station Road) @ 8:00-9:15 a.m.

Practices During the School Year

MondaysIf there is not a meet, we will have practice at Johnson Road Park from 6:00-7:00 p.m.

Thursdays—Before school practice time from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at Dogwood Park behind the school           

Saturdays – Shelby Farms Gate 8 (on Mullins Station Road) from 8:00-9:15 a.m.

Meets:  Mondays evenings–The time for the boys’ race time is 5:30, and the girls’ race time is 6:00; be there at least a half an hour early to warm up.  There will be 4-5 meets during the season, that will start the week of Sept. 13 and end with Regionals on October 16.  In past years, Dogwood runners have advanced to compete in state championship, held in Knoxville the last weekend in October

Saturday, August 29th Forrest Spence 5K/1 mile Race

Location: Memphis Botanic Gardens @ 8:00 a.m.

Coaches will be here at race, NOT at Shelby Farms Practice

Register: under Dogwood Elementary Dolphins, FEE Not included in team registration fee

Friday Night  September 24th Frank Horton

Location: Shelby Farms @ 7:00 p.m. All Coaches will be there, and it is a lot of fun! We would love to see you 

Saturday, December 4th St. Jude 5k

Location: B.B. King at Court Ave. @ 7:00 a.m.  Students under 12 need to have adult supervision

Parent volunteer opportunities are available throughout the season.  One critical way parents can contribute is by running (or biking!) along with our runners during practice.  Practice volunteers provide greater supervision of our runners on longer runs, allow for more defined pace groups, and help us focus on skill development.  If you are available to help in this way, please let us know.   

The fee to join our team is $100, which covers the MYA student registration fee, state meet team registration fee, Frank Horton meet fee, coach’s fees, TeamSnap fee, the uniform tank, the end of the season banquet charge for the runner, and incentives. 

We will use the TeamSnap app to communicate and share pictures with parents.  If you do not have this app installed on your phone, please do so before the weekend.
